How do you help with people in hardship?

Helping customers experiencing vulnerability or wellbeing and hardship issues is a vital part of how we operate. We have an inhouse wellbeing and vulnerability manager and relationships with financial mentors across New Zealand. We carry out wellbeing checks throughout the process, offer breathing space (repayment breaks) if needed, and our debt relief committee reviews cases for debt write off. We don't charge fees or excessive interest, don't have minimum repayment amounts or timeframes, and our approach works.

Do you visit people at home?

We have a highly-trained and skilled community team who visit people at home because we believe this is the best way to understand a customer's wellbeing situation in a way that digital collections methods cannot. We believe all relationships are based on mutual trust and understanding, and face-to-face is the best way to do this. Before all visits customers are advised in writing and have the chance to get a support person/authorised representative.

On 4 December 2023, the Commerce Commission closed a case concerning Intercoll Holdings Limited (now trading as DebtManagers) with a warning letter about some contacts in 2020–early 2021. The warning related to historic practices that are inconsistent with our current approach, which is focused on empathy and putting our customers and their wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. At that time, new majority shareholders were already overhauling practices and compliance. We cooperated fully. Today, our approach focuses on empathy and customer wellbeing.
